Most of times movie props are made from expanded polystyrene.
During the golden age of historical dramas, it was difficult to make real objects with a limited budget. Therefore, craftsmen used expanded polystyrene to make fake props: easy to break,so only used for shootings. That was the beginning of special movie props. When we think about it you can be amazed on how expanded polystyrene can be transformed in rocks or bricks. Mr.Suzuki is a skilled veteran of this art.
Shaping the material with heated wires and coating it with bond or resin are parts of the prop construction process. These delicate items are made for every movie. The most important thing in this work is “to understand, once you fail (because making a prop is quite difficult) the reason why you failed , so that for the next time you will find new ways to make a better product."
